Filming diary 2 & 3

Filming Diary 2&3

Filming Diary 2 - After talking with Ryan about the different days that we both could and could not do we found that in the recent look of dates there was no time that we were able to go out and get some more footage together. From this Ryan then said that he would go away without me on one of the days that he said he could and filming some more footage, the scenes that did not require me being in many of them.
The day after Ryan's filming we discussed the footage that he had collected. Due to bad weather he was not able to record a lot of footage, but with the amount that we had filmed at this stage every little bit of footage was better than what we did have.
Filming Diary 3 - Yesterday, after a long discussion with Ryan about other filming days that we could both do we found that once again there was little days and times that we could find that we were both able to do. Because of our need to get the final parts of our trailer filmed I decided that I would go out and get some more of the footage that we needed. Because Ryan is the person that kept the props I was only able to plan out some different shots that used me walking about, searching, running, washing and watching.
On filming day, after 2 days of heavy rain the field where we planned to film was water logged and a little flooded. But because the flooding was not that bad I decided to go ahead anyway. After getting my mother to be the camera person I planned some basic shots that I was going to be able to do without the use of props.

Title Idea's

Title Idea's Within the Trailer

Thinking about where to have the title showing within our film, although a small part of the process, it is still important for this to be considered when making a film trailer. You want to place it somewhere were the audience are going to notice it most. You don't want to put it too early otherwise the audience will make pre-judgments about the film before they have seen anything about it, where as you don't want to put it too late otherwise the audience may start to get bored while waiting for the film title to show up for them to look up, You don't want it to be on screen for to short as the audience may not get a good chance to remember the title, and you don't want it up for too long so the audience start to loose interest. Placing it during the high action scenes means that the audience will be focusing on what is happening and not what the title is, whereas you don't want to put it up during the slow moments otherwise the audience will begin to associate the film with that slow feeling.
This is why, in my opinion, I feel that the title of the film should be show about 3/4 of the way through the trailer, just after a high action sequence has been shown, that way the audience have had enough time to see what the film is about so that they can begin to associate the film title with what they have seen, also they will associate the film with the high thrill action feeling that we want to get across to the audience. But also allowing the trailer to carry on to show a little more of the emotion side within the film, showing that this film isn't just mindless violence within the threat of becoming infected with this new deadly disease, but that there will also be a solid story for them to follow and get their teeth stuck into.

Extras?

We like the idea of having other characters within our story, but as we have set our main protagonist as a teenager set in isolation fighting for survival.
We feel that the best way to incorporate other characters within the story would be to have them as characters that Alex can come across. This includes new enemy's for him to make and new friends for Alex to find trust in. But from finding friends he increases the chances of being found by gangs and the chances of running into zombies.
Adding in new characters means we can explore the different ways that Alex will interact with each character, then choosing the best reactions and trials they would have to go through we can add them into the trailer and cut out the parts that we feel don't add much to the story.
This would be providing on the availability on people to be able to act for our film.

Soundtrack

Matt and myself have  spent a few hours thinking about and creating a sound track for our trailer that we felt would work well. The music would start soft with an acoustic guitar, matching the solemn feel of the clips flashing up of the main characters past. Once around 20-30 seconds have passed then we would introduce the more high action scenes into the trailer, with this sudden change in visual we would have to match that sudden change in emotion with the music. This would be done by a bass line become very prominent, followed by heavier guitar and drums, this continues for another 20-30 seconds and then brakes off into a guitar solo section, in which the bass and drums continue but with less prominence. After around 10-15 seconds of that then the music would return to the heavier of the music sections but would slow down and eventually end with the acoustic guitar coming back in for a few seconds.

Allowing the trailer to end with the same feel that it began with, showing that as the days go on within this film of isolation, there are moments in life which pick up, the danger increases or something new gets added to the equation. But all in all it was always return to the feeling of being alone with no comfort.

Lots of tension and craziness. To see the normal done differently, eg empty locations that are not normally empty. Plus sexual appeal from the female characters.

Pre-Production: Audience Profiles Summary

Are target audience is late teens early twenties. the age that we feel a zombie film is most successful with as seen with

Audience profile 1: 28 Days Later.
The type of person that would go an see a post apocalyptic would be be younger people (15-30) as younger people might be more into the fictional world of nothingness. The genre is also similar to a zombie film in the setting of which the film is based. The setting alone helps to create tension and suspense, making the film more enticing to people that like horror based films, these people will most likely be younger people. The dominant gender that are likely to go and see the film are male, however that does not mean that women will not also go and see the film, however I expect the majority of the audience will be male. I don't think that the film appeals to a certain ethnicity as it does not portray a certain ethnicity in any way, either good or bad. This helps the film top appeal to a wider audience as it is not specifically aimed at any ethnicity. The class of the people that would be likely to go and see the film is skilled working/middle class people. This kind of film appeals to those that are better off than others, maybe becasue they are more interested in the genre than those of a lower class. I also think that the film will appeal the most to middle class/ working class students in collage or university. The film is filled with tension and suspense, the kind of thing a student would want to see in a film.

Audience profile 2: Outbreak
This film is very similar to 28 Days Later, but it has more action and less suspense, therefore it could be considered an action film, rather than a thriller. The type of audience that might go to see this film is most likely to be larger and more diverse than the audience 28 Days Later. The age range may be more broad, the age range of people may range from 10-55+ as the action genre is more appealing to a wider audience. The cross over of the genres also helps to make the prospective audience larger, this film will appeal to those that like action, thriller and sci-fi films, whereas 28 Days Later is a very specific genre and this may discourage some people from going to see the film, even if they like the concept of the film. This film also appeals to all ethnicities, however this film may appeal more to African-Americans than 28 Days Later as one of the main character is Morgan Freeman. The class of the people that may go to see the film will most likely be the same as that of 28 Days Later, middle/working class, however the cross over of genres may make the film appeal more to higher class viewers. Those type of people are into the whole action violence thing, of which this film has plenty of.

Audience profile 3: 12 Monkeys
This film is also similar to Outbreak and 28 Days Later, although is more based around the Sci-Fi genre than the others, however it still has many aspects of thrillers and action films. Like the other two films, this film is most likely to appeal to younger people as a majority (15-30), but the aspects of the Sci-Fi genre may also appeal to those that are older (40-50). The Sci-Fi aspects appeal to those who like films such as Star Wars and the action aspects of the film help to appeal to people that like films such as Saving Private Ryan. This mix of genres really helps make the film appeal to a much wider audience than if it was solely based around a single genre. The film also appeals to all ethnicities as there is not negative or positive representations of any ethnicity, however the main characters are white, which may put of those of different ethnicities. The class of the people that are likely to go and see this film is working/middle class. The genre of the film appeals to them rather than the upper class population. However appealing to the working and middle class is a good thing, as the majority of the population is either working or middle class.

Audience Profile - Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the dead

The horror comedy Zombieland focuses on two men who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies. Columbus is a big wuss -- but when you're afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive. Tallahassee is an AK-toting, zombie-slaying' bad ass whose single determination is to get the last Twinkie on earth. As they join forces with Wichita and Little Rock, who have also found unique ways to survive the zombie mayhem, they will have to determine which is worse: relying on each other or succumbing to the zombies.

As seen within the table, the audience members were mainly aged between 15-24. This would be because at this age people seek a thrill, they are always looking for the next thing that is going to bring them excitement in any way, shape or form. At this age they are able to watch films that feature gore and a sexual nature. What else can you suspect to see within a film filled with blood spewing, flesh munching decaying people? The film will allow them to get the thrill from seeing a zombies head being smashed in while also being able to get a laugh from the characters. The film's character allow the audience to be able to connect with the characters as they seem like every day people that you would see in the street. Instead on focusing around the group of ex-police who are highly trained with fire arms, you follow around one character who has a list of things wrong with him, who is also a is extremely scared of the zombies that he is fighting against. while also adding in a complete contrast of a man who seem to have been waiting for the zombie apocalypse his whole life. Seeing short clips of him getting overly excited about killing the zombies in an almost sick and twisted way. But ever bad-ass has his weakness, and for Woody Harleson this would be the need to find a Twinkie.

Within that we see that the film mainly attracted a male audience. This would be because, males are known for their love of gory films while females are known for looking more into the character development, wanting to see a film where they can connect to the characters and wanting to feel for those characters. But this does not get away from the fact that a female audience was attracted, this would be because, although it wasn't a main focus within the film, you can see the character development. You watch the bonds between the two main male characters as they get closer to each other and begin to depend on the others strengths to help them survive. While also watching the two female characters protecting each other as they have their sister bond. Finally mixing the two groups together and watching a love story begin to unfold.

Questionnaire analysis

The initial responses inform me that a vast majority of people who filled out the questionnaire do not like watching zombie movies unless the plot is to their liking. That could mean they only like watching movies such as Shaun of the Dead with its comedy genre but i feel that I am Legend had such good box office results that it means that our film which follows the same idea of the emotions of people will be liked.

With the mixed results of answers this is the most reliable answer of all the questions as the responses are various. The majority saying mixed is most likely because they wish to see relationships develop between the different sexes as they are far more interesting than a single sex relationship. The question does place that a male man character is secondly preferred so we have successfully managed to compensate both a group and male main character.
This question's response has immediately contradicted my first question analysis as it shows two thirds of the answers prefer action genre within a zombie movie which is interesting as i would not be comfortable forcing comedy within our trailer as I feel that to explore relationships successfully then we cannot have a comedy as our main focus. However we are not going to rule out comedy completely

This does not allow prove useful as the answers are not allowing anyone to see any differential with the results. The only option i see is that it does not matter when we set the film as there is no preference. to the time in which it is set
This could be the fact that the target age audience don't want to see people that are their age they'd rather see people middle aged. like in a majority of all the zombie films we looked at.

All of the above indicates that we will have a lot of things we will have to include in the trailer although we did have a indication that we would want to include the lists of parts that we questioned.

JVC GZ-E15 Camcorder
MainImage
great small camera with good definition and quality. Used for shots where the camera is in immediate danger of damage or the camera man must climb or travel a way that is not easy with a expensive camera.

Software:

This software is used to add the special effects to the film such as the gun shot, blood and fire. This software is not as simple to use as Premiere Pro therefore it took a lot longer to get the hang of using and it took many attempts to get the special effects looking acceptable, however in the end, they turned out good; not pro standard but OK. After effects features motion tracking which was very important for the blood effect, without it, the blood effect would not have been possible. After Effects was used in conjunction with Video CoPilot's action essential; which provided the blood burs, muzzle flair and the fire effects, as well as the sound effects for the punches, gun shots, reloading, shell bounce and fire sounds.
