The main job of a Drama is to give the audience a subject that has a
deep effect upon them. This is going to cause the audience to have a
connection with what they see in the movie.
The job of a Crime film is to give the audience a sense of danger, with also the added plot of pursuing the criminal.
Finally the job of a Thriller is to effect the audience in a way that keeps them on the edge of their seat with anticipation.
The trailer open with a man and his family going to a house for Thanks
Giving. This sets the audience in a situation which they are easily able to relate to, this establishes the equilibrium. Now
that they have made that relation to the audience they are going to be
able to have the most effect upon them as what they now show is going to
be able to affect them directly.
The children are shown going out to
play, this makes means that the children are now vulnerable as the
parents are not watching them. As a van drives along the street they
introduce the music which fits the mood of vulnerability and foreboding.
Now the parents realize that the children haven't been seen for a while
and begin to question where they are, next we are told that they were
seen playing on the van in which came alongside the music. This is where
the audience now know what has happened before the characters. We now
know that the Equilibrium has been broken.
This story plays on attacking one of the main focuses of human nature,
to care for something. As humans we look to be able to take care of
something and protect it, and when we see someone who is in a situation
where they con no longer care for something it has a direct effect upon
the audience.
As this is a trailer we know that this will not show the end result of
the film where either the equilibrium has been fixed or weather it
remains broken. This appeals to the audience as this brings up the main
question of 'what happens?' this is the main aspect the a trailer wants
to evoke because human curiosity is something that is going to drive the
audience.
The plot of the film from what we can see in the trailer is some kind of alien life from has invaded the earth, but not from space, but from the pacific ocean and humanity has to fight these aliens, so the build giant fighting robots called jaeger's with two pilots to control them in order to save the world from the danger that is the alien invasion.
The plot of Pacific Rim conforms perfectly, like most other films to Todorov's narrative theory, there is a disruption of the equilibrium and the character of the film have to try and restore it by defeating the giant aliens. The film is conforms to Propp's narrative theory, the characters controlling the jager's are the hero's, the aliens are the villains and the there are numerous helpers and dispatchers along the way.
It is quite uncommon for this much of a story to be given away in the trailer for a film, but since the story is not the main feature of a film like this, it becomes irrelevant as the cgi is the main feature within this film.
The setting of the film is based around cities that border the pacific ocean, such as Sydney, Australia and San Francisco, USA. The setting in the trailer hops around all different places making it hard for the audience to establish a specific setting for the film. Most of the trailer is set inside Jager workshops and in cities destroyed by the aliens. This change of settings thoughout the trailer helps to make the trailer engaging and also enables the studio to show off their amazing CGI work on the Jager's and the urban areas.
The Pacific Rim trailer features a heavy distorted soundtrack with what sound like a fog horn placed over the top of the music, especially in the beginning of the trailer, with a voice over from one of the character though out the film.
The voice over provides a narrative to the audience explaining how and when the crisis started to unfold while the music help to give the trailer a sense of scale. The music also helps the audience engage with the trailer making them want to watch the trailer all the way though and hopefully, make them want to watch the entire film.
The costume design for the character in the film is futuristic as the film is not set that far ahead in the future, by the costume do have a whiff of sci-fi about them. As you would expect, each characters costume is different depending on their role in the film.
The sheer amount of camera angle used in just the trailer of the film really give an impression that the director really wanted the audience to be able to feel the size of the aliens and the Jagers, there are so many different shot that really show just how big the aliens are, especially when they are up against a skyscraper in the city, you can really see that they are, literally, as big as buildings. As the film is something like 80% CGI, the director could really go all out on the camera angles as there were no physical limitations on what the camera angles could be.
Django Unchained comes under the genre of Western.
Usually, the central plot of western films is the classic, simple goal
of maintaining law and order on the frontier in a fast-paced action
story. Normally rooted in archetypal conflict - good vs bad, heroes vs
villains. The western hero usually stands alone and faces danger on his
own, against the forces of lawlessness, with an expert display of his
physical skills, whether that be roping, gun-play, horse-handling.
Within the trailer for Django Unchained we set up the USP of the actors that are going to be featured within this film, we start off by seeing that Jamie Foxx is going to be playing our Hero the main Protagonist Django, Christoph Waltz Is going to be playing the Dispatcher Dr. King Schultz, and Leonardo DiCaprio is going to be playing the main role of the Villain
"Monsieur" Calvin J. Candie. This sets up some names that are going to
attract an audience, as they have seen these men in many different film
such as: Jamie Foxx has played Darryl in Due Date, Nick Rice in Law
Abiding Citizen and others; Christoph Waltz has played August Rosenbluth
in Water For Elephants, Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers; Leonardo DiCaprio has played Jack Dawson in Titanic, Dom Cobb in Inception.
These
names bring up some films that have been known of by everyone. This
causes the film to reach out to a wider audience as they grasp the fans
of the actors, not just the fans of the genre.
The
narrative of the trailer starts with a state of equilibrium of two men
on horseback travelling with several black male slaves that they will
sell off to the highest bidder. This gives a sense of the time period
that blacks were not treated as equals, they were abused and used to
treat the white as in they were royalty.
We
then have the disruption of the equilibrium when Dr. King Schultz frees
Django from being a slave and offers him a chance to get revenge upon
the men that enslaved him and his wife, of whom he was separated from.
The
Recognition that the equilibrium has been broken is when Django
realises that they only chance he is going to have to get his wife back
would be to agree to Dr. King Schultz's deal and help him eliminate the
Brittle Brothers, of which Django knows who they are.
The
attempt to repair is shown through Django going around hunting and
killing the members of the Brittle Brothers and anyone who assisted
them. This shows the determination of Django and love he has for his
wife as he knows what kind of conditions that slaves can be placed in.
He knows that he is the only one who is going to be able to save her.
But of
course because this is just a trailer and they don't want to give to
much away to the audience they are not going to show the reinstatement
of the equilibrium. As this is what is going to bring the audience into
watch the film, the enigma question of "is Django going to succeed?"
The verbal code used within the trailer with such lines as "I like the
way you die boy" gives the audience the idea that Django is going to
enjoy his role as a bounty hunter in his quest of vengeance against the
group of people who took away his wife and sold her into slavery. But
this also adds the sub-plot question of is Django going to get too
caught up in his quest for revenge and not know when to stop, sending
him on a spree killing anyone who he fills doesn't deserve to live.
The line "I will agree to give you your freedom" allows the audience to
know that this story is going to be more that a fight for survival and
vengeance but also the freedom of himself from slavery. The story seems
to feature a domino effect, for Django to complete his long term goal of
finding and freeing his wife he is going to have to complete a series
of other tasks to be able to build up to the big fight that is bound to
happen at the end.
The symbolic aspects such the image of Django's arms breaking out of his wrist chains supports the title of the film being Django Unchained
but this also allows the audience to get symbolic interpretation that
it is not going to be an easy task, chains aren't the easiest of things
to physically break out of metal chains. This allows the audience to
know that there is going to a struggle for Django to complete his task.
Another symbolic aspect are the sub-settings of Plantations, this
connotes slaves and rich business men. Now because we know that Django
is a black male we know that this is going to make life difficult for
him, living in the times period that he does, but this adds to the
suspense of the film, as they see a man rise up against all odds against
a group of outlaw/slave traders, to find and free his love.
Now You See me comes under the genre of Thriller & Crime and Sub-genre Caper Film.
Director - Louis Leterrier
Louis Leterrier is known for making such films as The Incredibal Hulk, Clash of the Titans
which are both filled with action packed scenes that will leave you
sitting on your seat with suspense. The suspense that he knows how to
create within a film will add to the atmosphere of this film as we know
it tell the story of people who are on the run from the FBI, meaning
some extremely suspenseful scenes are bound to be used.
Special Effects - Of-course this film is going to use
visual effects... It's a film about illusionists that pull of reality
defying stunts, such as telerporting a man from a performance in the US
to a bank in France... making him disappear in the middle of the stage
on show to all of the public. This means that a lot os visual effects
are going to be used within the film and so they want to show the public
that this is going to be one of the key features and they do so within
the trailer by show spectacual visual editing............ But because
this is a film about magic they are keeping in some of the simple magic
tricks which do not need and visual effects to perform such as making a
card change in plain view.
The Vow targeted the audience of a female audience aged 13+. This
audience is met from the use of a love story that is deeply effecting
and of course the use of Channing Tatum. The film needs to do more than
to just look like it has a good story. It need to appeal to the eyes of
many female audience members, and what better way to do that than to
include an attractive male to play the lading man? Channing Tatum has
been in films featuring the action genre such as G.I. Joe and 21 Jump
Street (With a side of comedy). Plus films that are purely designed to
give the lady's something to look at like Magic Mike. Channing Tatum is a
person who is going to be able to deliver a character that is going to
both tug on the heart strings of his audience while giving them
something pleasant to look at.
The trailer set up a happy atmosphere with the combination of light
scenes, happy music and seeing the love relationship between two people.
This gives the audience that beginning smile that is going to make them
sit back, relax and to enjoy this love story. This then changes when
you hear Channing Tatums voice come over the music telling the audience
that moments are important for they have the power to change our lives,
and that what would it be like if you could not remember any of them.
This then ques for the equilibrium to be broken and the tradagy is to
begin. This hit the audience as the happy music that has been playing is
suddenly cut off by both the sight and sound of a truck hitting the car
that Leo and Paige Collins are in. Adding even more drama to this
sudden moment just happens to be at night, a time that we associate with
danger.
We are shown the struggle that Leo is going to have to go through to try
and get the love of his wife back. This emotional event plays with the
heartstrings of it's audience as it allows the audience to think about
what it would be like to be married to someone and for them to suddenly
not know who you are. Also as a there would be people in a
relationship/partnership in the audience it focuses on a subject that is
close to the hearts of any of the audience members. Allowing it to take
more of an emotional effect upon the audience.
Immediately within this trailer we are given some brief background information by the narrator about the two main characters who are being introduced. Such as how the bear comes to life in the first place, this is good as it gives the audience the information they need to understand the rest of the trailer. Just after this the first funny part of the trailer comes in, showing that its a comedy film.
The fact that the bear is not only talking but also smoking grabs the audiences attention as it is something that opposes the typical stereotypes of a normal teddy bear. At this point the music also comes in over the top of the video, the music is quite low key and slow, making the two characters seem stupid. Next the first set of titles come up on the screen saying 'from the creator of Family Guy.' This is a good thing to put as the first title as it means that any fans of the family guy series will be instantly interested. After this the bear, 'Ted' and his owner 'John' are seen talking about the idea of john getting engaged. This introduces another character into the film and also gives the audience some more information about the story line of the film. After this, Ted is seen driving the car while John is sitting in the passenger seat, yet again this isn't a very stereotypical thing for a teddy bear to be doing so it makes the film stand out. Throughout the trailer there are many funny comments at times where there should be serious ones such as 'thats my bad, i was sending a tweet' after having a car accident. This again shows the kind of humour that is repeated throughout the film giving the audience an idea of what the film is all about. At the end of the trailer there is titles with the name of the film, and the website for it. It is good to pt these at the end as it means that they wont be forgotten while watching other parts of the trailer.
There are a few USPs from Riddick, one of which would be the actor Vin Diesel playing the main role of Riddick. Vin Diesel has been known for his many high budget, fast paced action films such as: Fast and Furious, xXx. This gives the film the advantage of having an action movie star as their lead role, allowing the film to reach out the fans of the actors as this means that the film will be appealing to more than just people who enjoy the story. Another aspect to this film would be the fact that is it apart of a trilogy. Riddick is the third film following The Chronicles of Riddick and The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. This means that the film is going to have a huge reach out to the fans of the Riddick trilogy.
The begging of the trailer shows a bird like creature flying over a rocky wasteland, this sets the location of the film to the audience as we now know that Riddick is going to have to deal with more than just Bounty Hunters that are pursuing him, but also the harsh environment, but as people who have seen the previous Riddick films would know, Riddick is a man who can survive nearly anything. This means that the audience are raised with question "how is Riddick going to use the environment against his enemy's? or how is it going to challenge him?"
Riddick has a defined dress code, he is always seen with his signature goggles, which are most likely used to protect his eyes from the harsh sand storms that are likely to appear out in the sandy, rocky wasteland. Also known for his glowing silver eyes, we know that these give him the ability to see in the dark, meaning night is when he is at his most dangerous. As we see from the trailer Riddick is a strongly built man, meaning the audience are expecting a lot of high action fight scenes and moments when pure strength are used, but now we add in his ability to be able to use the darkness against his enemy's we now get the aspect that stealth will be a highly used aspect.
We open to Riddick narrating "I don't know how many times I've been crossed off the list and been left for dead." this allows the audience to get that full feeling of how indestructible Riddick is but also adds to the story, does being 'killed' this many times mean that Riddick had a personal vendetta against these people? adding question are the main aspect of a trailer which is going to be able to bring the audience in as we crave knowledge. We've asked the question, now we need the answer.
When watching the trailer, the first thing that we notice is the music. The first thing that grips us is this deep meaningful music that sets a calm/sad mood, setting up the audience seeing the character we all know to be superman floating in the water with rubble and wood all around him, from this we get the sense that chaos has won, Superman has been beaten. This makes the audience question everything within the film, Who beat superman? How was he beaten? ect. Making the audience want to see what fate has been pus toed upon the loved character.
The trailer jumps around from Clark Kent's adult life and his child life, indicating that his younger life is just as important as his life as Superman. We are restricted by the trailer not showing us many of the iconic things of superman, such as the the cape, or his ability to fly. This builds suspense for the film, allowing the audience to get their blood pumping for what is to come within the film, towards the end of the trailer both the cape and Superman flying is shown, this allows the audience to relax, but still want more, they know that this is going to show the life of Clark Kent and his change into Superman, but it will also show the Superman that we all know and love. This is going to make the audience want to see it. Other Superman films have gone over his life as a child but only briefly, we never fully know what life was like for him as a child. This allows us to find out, this is one of the key USPs of the film, that we get to see weather Clark found it easy to hide his powers or if it was very difficult, was he one of the populars or was he left out. All these questions will be answered in this film, and that is what people want to see. They know the story of superman, they want to see something new, something never before seen, something that they can walk away from with a smile on their face and a topic of conversation for the weeks ahead. This trailer give this atmosphere to Man of Steel.
Super Man is known for having many spectacular powers which to humans are physically impossible. Such as Flying, Super Strength, Lazer Vision ect. All of these powers would need to be created with special/visual effects. Special effects would be such things as pulley systems connected to a bus so when Clark Kent lifts it up it looks like he is doing it with his incredible strength when in reality people off screen are making the bus lift. Visual effects would be Superman's lazer eyes, this would be done post-production, using computer software the team who edit the film together would add in effects that make Superman look like he is really shooting lazers out of his eyes. All of these, when seen on screen, seem amazing to watch, they make the films look even more spectacular than before. Special effects don't make a film what it is, but they sure do help make it all it can be. The well put together combined special and visual effects allow the audience to see no different from real life and what has been edited in, allowing the audience to become fully amerced within the film.
Action, this is one of the main genres that are known and loved by many different people, action give the audience that moment of release where they can just sit back and watch something that is going to show them excitement, risk, love, hate, and many other things. Action is used to escape the boring life that we live and be replaced by a world of pure adrenalin. Moving into the sub-genre, Superhero films, Superman is one of the biggest superheros known to man, you can ask any person if they know who superman is and the answer will most likely always be the same. Superhero films allow us to see the impossible, people are always saying that 'you can't do this' or 'you can't do that', superhero films take those statement and chuck them out the window, because that's what makes them great. People want to see something that is going to amaze them, make them want to be that person that they see on the screen in front of them. Using the world of imagination and bringing people out of their everyday life and giving them something to think and wish about. Giving them that excitement that we want everyday in our lives.
The Lone Ranger comes under the genre of Western Action film.
The Lone Ranger uses the USP of being a part of the Disney
family. By being a part of Disney it already reaches out to a wide
audience as Disney is known around the world for delivering their high
quality entertainment; this means that the film is going to be able to
reach across all range of ages.
Another USP
would be the cast, Johnny Depp, Depp has starred in many Disney film
and other industries. He is known for his role as Capitan Jack Sparrow,
Mad Hatter, Sweeny Todd, Willy Wonka, Barnabas Collins
and many more. By starring a big name such as Depp they are reching
their audience even further as he attracts many variations of audiences.
Also staring in the film is the actor Armie Hammer, he
has not played many big roles in the films that he has been in, this
means that he is now able to bring that new actor aspect into the film,
as people won't know what to expect from him, whereas with Johnny Depp
he is going to have to meet the viewer's expectations.
The story of the Lone Ranger is highly known, this means that
it is going to appeal to a wider audience as they will have a vague idea
of what the film is going to consist of. Whether you're a fan of the
Western Film Genre or just a fan of action films, this is going to have
been appealing to every aspect that they could trying to bring the
audience in.
As the trailer starts we see a black and white Disney logo which we zoom
into fading into a vast open wasteland which we now associate with the
Wild West. This symbolic code automatically makes us this that this film
is going to be a cowboy film, filled with hourseback chases,
gunslingers, standoffs, and Red-Indians. These are the ideas that we are
brought to from seeing that beginning scene.
The trailer for the third part of the Ironman series pits Tony Stark Billionaire and publicly known as the superhero Ironman. Stark still recovering emotionally from the events that occurred in New York ( See Avenger Assemble). His close friends and himself threatened by a male who's ends know no end in the attack against the free world. This journey, at every turn,
will test his mental and physical form. Stark is left to
survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to
protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers
the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man
make the suit or does the suit make the man?
The trailer begins with Robert's character Tony narrating his current life position. the description of his wealth, intelligence and love life allowing us the audience to see the luxurious part of his life. He asks the question of "why cant i sleep?" this question is aimed both at the audience and at himself and shows tony as a weak hero who at that point is vulnerable. The introduction to the antagonist known as 'The Mandarin' has The Mandarin now controlling the voice over which could indicate the strength and his ability to over power Tony saying "you'll never see me coming"this threatening message indicates to us that he is extremely intelligent with the clip of a explosion indicating his capability upon great acts of violence.
The press questioning where is Tony Stark and what are you going to do about it leads us to believe that Tony has been defeated b the mandarin before he has begun. This struggle of Protagonist being knocked down and then coming back up to defeat the Antagonist is very much based around...
The destruction of his home indicates that this war/battle between Tony and the Madarin has overwhelmed Tony in the fact that he cannot hide. This again indicates to the underdog being Ton.
At 1.44 we see Pepper strapped into some sort of chair which contradicts the previous statement made by Tony of i have to protect the things i hold dear to me.
Whilst at 1.59 we see and hear Tony state "Just good old fashioned revenge" which could mean that the Protagonist has lost all sense of honour and is now hell bent on destroying The Mandarin no matter what.
The final part of the clip see loads of Ironman suits fly into the shot indicating the battle being to much for Tony and he has had to accept help in either saving the world or destroying The Mandarin.
One of the initial factors that draws people into see GI Joe is the blockbuster names such as Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis. Having big actors that have stared in other big blockbusters helps to attract a bigger audience as many people will see any film that comes out with there favourite actor in, the more big name actor that a film has, the larger the potential audience is. The actors that appear in a film can have a big impact on whether a film is a total success, or a complete failure.
The film is a very typical action film, with large Hollywood exploisions and lots of guns and gun fights, as well as a few exploding helicopters thrown into the mix. This kind of thing is very stereotypical of Hollywood action films that help to attract an audience of all ages, hopefully making the film more successful. All of the actors in the film (those that are G.I Joe's) are all wearing army style camouflage, which is a trait carried over from the original G.I Joe action figures from the 60's. Not only does this help the characters not drift away from there origins, but also helps to attract an audience, because where there is army gear there is guns, and where there is guns there is gunfights, which attract the audience.
The plot of the story is quite elaborate in the fact that the G.I Joe'shave to save the entire world from some evil power that is not disclosed in the trailer, which helps to leave the audience guessing on what the things it is that they are trying to destroy.
At the beginning of the trailer, we are introduced to the main characters. the trailer has a narrative that is linear, meaning that the trailer is portrayed in the same order as the film, with equilibrium at the start, then the even to disrupt that equilibrium, we are then introduced to the princess/victim, the hero then saves saves the victim but in the process, puts their own life in danger.
This links in with Todorov's narrative theory, but as it is a trailer, we do not see the final stage where equilibrium is restored. We are also introduced to the helper, who is the partner to the protagonist, of which their fate is unclear from the trailer. this links in with .
The trailer uses camera angles to portray the more important characters in the film by using low angle shots, and uses high angle shots to shot the princess, as it makes them look more vulnerable.
With the use of tattered clothes instigates the idea that these characters are poor and not of a high social class. The sci fi factor of some sort of hovering ship draws the attentions of sci fi fans with the idea of a alien invasion. if you read the books then you would understadn that this is not the case.
the use of sound with non diagetic music combined with phrases from characters within the film create a really tense atmosphere giving us the idea that we will be kept suspended throughout the film.
This is The End features the idea of the actors within the film playing themselves. This means that they are able to both mock and praise themselves in ways that are going to amuse the audience.
The use of mocking and praising themselves allows the actors to use aspects of their careers to judge what they do. For instance for the actors who have recently been in successful films recently will praise themselves to extreme levels, and the one who haven't been in very successful films will mock themselves. But both will use the way that the media has presented them to the public to conform to that idea, push it to its edge and take every sense of it literally, or they will completely go against what has been said.
The trailer features the idea that celebrities are spoilt and whiny then include a section of the film where the men are auguring about who gets to eat the Milkyway. This re-enforces the idea that they feel like they should get what they want because they are famous and that when they don't get it then they throw a temper tantrum. This appeals to the audience as it gives them something that they can understand and relate to in the sense of knowing that the media twist things to make them more interesting for the audience. This appeals to the audience as it provides a comic plot twist as the actors are having to play themselves in a different persona to follow the way that they are presented, this gives the audience that level of understanding as they have heard that the actor acts in a certain way and so they don't have to get use to the idea that this actor is nothing like how they have been discribed as. But also as because they are being so against the way that they have been presented that they are able to make a joke out of that. All of this allows the audience to enjoy the film as much as the actors when they were making it.
The extensive use of celebrities featured in this film appeals to a wider audience, for instance, featuring Channing Tatum, this means that it is going to reach out to a wider female audience because he is known for his good looks and muscles. Also, the cameo appearance from Emma Watson, this reaches to most obviously Harry Potter fans, a lot of fans of the Harry Potter series will want to see how the actors do in other films, and because Emma Watson has not done a lot of comedy films this means it gives them a chance to see her in a different aspect. Rhianna's cameo appearance in the trailer just reaches to fans of the pop genre, and there is nothing that fan of a music artist love more than seeing them feature within a film as it gives them something else that they can relate that person to other than that music.
The Comedt Genre is portrayed straight away, the protagonists of the film are invited to a house party of a fellow celebrity. We cut to them arriving at the party and talking to the host, who tells them that he loves his house so much that it feels like it's just another part of him and that the two men have just entered him, in which they reply with "you let us both come inside you" using the sexual innuendo to appeal to a more mature audience. The trailer wants to let the audience know that this is going to be a film that they can sit back, relax and enjoy without having to pay too much attention. The codes and conventions of the comedy genre are shown by the small humour of violence, sexual innuendos and childish behaviour.
